Introduction to volume: 6th grade maths

A motivational introduction to volume in 6th grade maths!

I started the class saying that we had a famous guest among us. Then I started dropping hints: he works at a diner, he is sweet and kind, he lives in a pineapple… And when someone guessed it right, I showed them the Sponge Bob.

Then I took a cm3 piece and had the students guess just how many of them would fill up a Sponge Bob and write it down in their notebooks. Sponge Bob was attached to the blackboard and at the end of the week, when we had learned how to calculate volume, we took it down, measured it and calculated its volume!

The sponge cost about 1 euro, so a cheap and motivational idea!
